Editing a Page

Locate the Page

To edit a new or existing page, you need to hard select it (click on the page template icon rather than the title area) and click on "Edit."

Basic Authoring Environment

Once you open a page for editing, you will see a screen with a number of options and interfaces.

1. Side Panel

This area is a tab environment that allows you to view and/or insert:

  • Assets - insert documents, images, and videos via drag and drop from the panel directly onto components that support it.
  • Components - insert allowed page components onto the page via drag and drop. Components are the building blocks of a page.
  • Content Tree - this is a view letting you see and locate components already added to the page. The view is in a nested tree format for the heirarchy. Users can click on components in the list to locate them directly on the page.

*Note: If components disappear or pages display a 500 Server error when doing "View as Published," check the Content Tree for misconfigured components.

2. Page Information & Sandbox Screen

Page Information

Selecting the Page Information (EQ) dropdown will give you a number of choices:

  • Open Properties - opens the Page Properties for this page.
  • Lock Page - Locks the page for editing. Disabled for use by default.
  • Publish Page - Publishes the page. Disabled for use by default.
  • Unpublish Page - Unpublish this page. Disabled for use by default.
  • View as Published - View how the page renders from a hosted server. More accurate than "Preview" mode.
  • View in Admin - Open the Sites UI page directly to this page's path.
  • Help - Display AEM help.

Sandbox Screen

The Sandbox Screen is accessed via the Emulator button to the right of the Page Information button. Uses of the emulator allows authors to:

  • Switch between Desktop views and multiple "Mobile" device views.
  • Clicking on a device name in the Emulator bar will resize the authoring environment to that device width.
  • Utilizing this method, users are able to edit component layouts for Mobile devices to better fit components that may not have the best Desktop-to-Mobile view.
  • There are Mobile design considerations to be aware of when authoring for mobile devices.

While in Edit Mode, the page contents may look improperly spaced. To see a more accurate representation, there are two options:

  • Click Preview on the top right corner of the screen and refresh the page.
  • Select "View as Published" from the Page Information (EQ) dropdown menu at the top left corner of the screen.

3. Edit/Layout Modes & Preview

There are several Authoring modes to be aware of. Of the 4 selectable, only Edit and Layout pertain to our usage at this time. Ensure you are in edit mode by selecting Edit on the top right corner of the page.

  • Edit: Edit mode is the default authoring mode. This mode let's authors make updates and edits to the page content and to insert and/or remove components.
  • Layout: Let's users make layout adjustments to how the content renders dynamically when components are created on the page. Allows for component column width resizing, drop-line status, and visibility.

4. Content Authoring Area

On any editable page, you will see a root container in which you can add various components to populate the page. To add a component, you can:

  1. Double click on "Drag components here" and you will see an menu popping up, allowing you to select a component from the list.
  2. Single click on "Drag components here" and you will see an "+" icon, which prompts the same component list that you can select from.
  3. Open the side panel and drag and drop one of the options from the component library.
